You might be wondering what yoga is, what its benefits are and whether or not it could be for you. If any of these thoughts are true for you, here are a few ideas to give you a glimpse into the world of yoga.
Often, yoga is associated with mastery of difficult physical postures, the need to be flexible and strong before trying it, or with having an eternally calm and still mind that doesn't chatter. These assumptions are often given as reasons when people tell me why they don't or 'can't' do yoga. The funny thing is that none of these are the reality of what yoga is, or represent any prerequisites required for doing it!
Despite having its roots in ancient tradition, yoga can be applied to modern day living in a variety of ways. Yoga offers different tools and practices that can help bring about balance in one's life, having a positive impact on physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Although the physical postures or asanas, are often what are most associated with yoga, they by no means create the full picture. Breathing practices, mindfulness and meditation, as well as principles for living a balanced and harmonious life, all make up the practice of yoga. There are many different types of yoga and no 'right' or one way to practice it, you can start yoga at any time in life, in a way that suits you.
Through developing your own practice of yoga, you may deepen the connection between your mind and body, while creating a greater sense of balance and ease in your life, ultimately enhancing your overall wellbeing.
